From the beginning of November to the end of March, there is practically no tour operator-organised tourism in Crete, unlike other destinations such as southern Spain or Cyprus, which are well-known winter destinations.

All major hotels and resorts in Crete are closed and there are no direct charter flights as in the summer months.

Discover ancient traditional customs and traditions

From November to March is the time for the olive harvest and, especially in the countryside, almost every Cretan is a proud owner of olive trees. Due to the often difficult terrain, harvesting is still done using traditional methods (spreading nets, beating olives from the tree with sticks). At least every other day, the filled sacks are taken to the olive mill.

And from mid-October, columns of smoke rise from the landscape all over Crete. This is when the raki distilleries are put into operation, of which almost every village has at least one.

Although there are no direct charter flights from the beginning of November to the end of March, as in the summer months, the island remains very well connected with most European cities. Several airlines offer flights mostly via Athens or Thessaloniki to both Heraklion and Chania, Crete. The connecting flight is usually organised to minimise waiting time at the airport.
