The Kourtaliotiko Gorge
10 km after Armeni, south of Rethymno, a road turns off to the right towards Preveli and Plakias. It crosses the village of Koxare and then enters the Kourtaliatiko Gorge, which is impressive, especially at its beginning, and about 3 km long. On the right-hand side of the road is the small rock chapel of Agia Kyriaki, which is worth stopping for. 900 m further on, steps lead down in five minutes to the chapel of Agios Nikolaos.
From there you have a good view of the springs of the Mesopotamos stream, which rises on the opposite wall of the gorge and flows into the sea at Preveli beach.
