The Agia Irini Gorge
While the road from Agia Irini winds 27 winding kilometres down the slopes to Sougia, walkers can take a much shorter route through the Agia Irini Gorge. The Agia Irini Gorge is almost as imposing as the Samaria Gorge, but mostly nearly people-free. Here, too, the rock faces are several 100 m high, and large parts are covered with forest.
There is a nice taverna at the exit of the gorge. From there, you can take an earth road to the main road and then reach Sougia after about 4 km. The tavern owner will also be happy to order a taxi for the return journey to your own vehicle, which you have parked in Agia Irini.
