Cycling holidays on Crete - wonderful cycling tours through high mountains and traditional villages
The high mountains of Crete, the olive groves and vines, the original villages and ancient buildings form an impressive backdrop also for cycling fans.
1
Cycling through the white mountains of Crete
This relaxed, but winding and panoramic tour takes you around the two mountain peaks of Fourni and Agathes, which are about 1500 m high. You will arrive in remote villages with traditional kafenia on tiny plateaus, where only a handful of people live, and you will have a view of the Imbros Gorge, which may stimulate your hiking appetite. For mountain biking, however, you will need to be in very good physical condition, as some sections of the route are steeply uphill.
2
Bike tour through the Apokoronas Peninsula
On the peninsula, which stretches out into the Aegean Sea between Georgioupolis and the bay of Souda, you have time enough for a chat with locals in beautiful coffee houses, for a short hike in the green and for a bath and lunch directly at the sea. You can often see white mountains, sea, Akrotiri peninsula and the city of Chania from the same location.
3
Mountain bike tour: villages in the backcountry of Georgioupolis
Great villages hide directly in the hinterland of Georgioupolis. In less than 25 km you can experience beautiful landscapes, hidden churches, an amazing castle and a Kafenio that seems to sink into Bougainvilleen. And of course there are nice Cretans on top of that.
4
By bike to the mountain village of Argyroupolis
Only a few kilometres from Georgioupolis at the north-eastern foot of the White Mountains lies the idyllic mountain village called Argyroupolis. It is known for its springs, which gush down from airy stone walls under shady trees in many small waterfalls. Along the road, rustic taverns await hungry and thirsty visitors.
5
Lake Kournas: Crete's only natural freshwater lake
Crete's only natural freshwater lake, with its turquoise water and picturesque mountain scenery, seems to have been transported here from the Alps. It is a protected area, almost circular and 22.5 metres deep at its deepest point. Even in midsummer it rarely gets too crowded here and the pretty, colourful pedal boats are also available in sufficient numbers. Also rare animal and plant species, like water turtles, dragonflies and countless bird species can be seen here.
