The Minoan settlement of Vassiliki

In the east of Crete near Ierapetra you will find an ancient settlement from the Minoan era. The clearly visible foundation walls made of stacked stones give a nice impression of the way of life of the people around 2,300 years ago.

The archaeological excavations at Vassiliki revealed ceramic vessels that were coloured in a special way during firing by different flame intensities. This traditional art form entered common usage as the 'Vassiliki style'.
