The pristine beach of Agios Pavlos
Agios Pavlos is located 58 kilometres south of Rethymno and six kilometres southeast of Triopetra, close to Cape Melissa. You can easily reach the beach with its village of the same name via Sachtouria.
It is a well-hidden, sheltered cove ideal for a relaxing stay by the sea. The water is clear and has an almost magical greenish hue. The sand shimmers golden brown in the sun. Occasionally, small and larger rocks jut out of the water and perfect the panorama. Particularly remarkable is the rock formation called 'Sleeping Dragon'. It is indeed reminiscent of a resting mythical creature.For extended relaxation, rent one of the sunbeds and a parasol. In addition, it is possible to rent a pedal boat. A few tavernas and snack bars are available. The shallow, calm sea water is perfect for cooling off - even for small children. Behind the beach, you will find only a few buildings on the hills. These are hotels and apartment buildings of a tranquil size.
On foot, you can reach another dream beach with high sand hills in a westerly direction: Akoumiani Gialia is its name. For some, it is the most beautiful beach in the district of Rethymno. The water on this sandy beach shines in particularly beautiful shades of blue. Mighty rocks rise out of the sea, also in the form of a small gate. Usually the water is very calm. As this is an absolutely natural beach, there are no tavernas and no sunbed rental. Just bring a blanket and food with you.
In some places, the impressive rocks offer shade, so you don't need a parasol. Sporty people can bring their trainers to carefully climb the rocks on the east side. The view over the Libyan Sea is magnificent. And a surprise awaits you: if you continue walking towards the southeast, you will find a well-hidden saltwater lake. It is called Vourvoulitis and is surrounded by steep cliffs. A descent is therefore very arduous. The lake has an underground entrance to the sea, which explains its salinity.
Near Agios Pavlos you will discover a small, picturesque church. The church is called Saint Paul. Legend has it that the saint found shelter there on his journey to Rome. Further inland and well hidden is the church of St. Vlasios. Once again it becomes clear what a religiously influenced region this is, although it is sparsely populated. This is also the reason why nude bathing should be avoided on the beaches of the region.
